ASUU Strike: ‘Operation No Resumption, No Election’ – Nigerian Students Declare

Due to the ongoing ASUU strike, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced its plan to boycott the upcoming general elections.
The students union in a statement signed by its President, Comrade Danielson Akpan on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, said the lingering ASUU strike is a deliberate ploy to disenfranchise students who registered for the elections within their school environments.
The statement further says the union took the decision following the prolonged disagreement between the federal government, ASUU and ASUP.
The statement reads:
“The leadership of NANS after careful observation of the continued insensitive shut down of our universities due to the strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and Academic staff union of polytechnics wish to unapologetically declare ‘Operation No Resumption, No Election’
“It appears that the gains recorded in the last few weeks has been eroded by the consistent shut down of our schools and barely 12days to the commencement of the general elections. it is instructive to note that the students’ constituency constitutes the largest votes segment, registered voters with 22.3m as released by INEC.
“These continuous strike actions by both ASUU and ASUP has not only brought increased pain on students and parents it is now seen by us as a deliberate ploy to disenfranchise our members, especially those who are registered within their school environments.
“Consequently Nigerian students have decided to take their destinies in their hands, enough of politics being played with our future. We wish to inform the general public that Nigerian students would resist any election conducted in any part of the country should pour campuses be shut till election date.
“We are conscious layers of the nation and on no account shall we allow this disenfranchisement of the largest voting population of our members in a major election to pass due to no fault of the students. We have 22.3m registered students, eligible to change re destiny of the nation.
We refused to be sacrificed in exercising this obligatory demand to our nation at this crucial moment. Our voices must be heard and our votes must count.
”To this end, the NANS leadership wish to declare ‘Operation No Resumption, No Election.”

Lagos State Records 134% Rise In Sexual Abuse And Domestic Violence – New Report

The 2018 report of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team of the Ministry of Justice, Lagos State, has shown a 134 per cent increase in cases of rape, defilement and domestic violence handled by the agency compared to the previous year.
The report indicated that DSVRT handled 2,356 cases in 2018 – 1,312 higher than 1,044 cases treated in the preceding year. In the year under review, the agency recorded 1,750 domestic violence cases, 279 child abuse cases, 78 defilement cases, 44 cases of rape, 51 attempted rape cases and 154 other cases.
While the number of domestic violence cases increased by 817, the incidence of child abuse and defilement rose by 251 and 37 respectively. Rape cases was 24 higher compared to the 2017 report.
According to the 2018 statistics, the office on the average received 166 new cases monthly and got 840 genuine reports via the 6820 emergency short code.
The report stated:-
“The team recorded a major increase in the number of cases handled in 2018. A total number of 2,356 cases, including 1,750 domestic violence cases, 279 child abuse cases, 78 defilement cases, 44 rape cases, 51 attempted rape cases and 154 other cases were handled. It was discovered that the number of cases increased by 134 per cent in the year 2018.
“DSVRT has responded to 439 reports of domestic violence, 215 reports of sexual abuse and 186 reports of child abuse – all reported via the 6820 platform. What is most exciting about the platform is that it breaks the initial barrier of people not wanting to make formal reports at an office or police station. We are now able to interact directly with survivors and concerned witnesses and take vital steps in dealing with a case.”
The report added that DSVRT focused on children who experienced violence at the hands of close relations, noting that a total number of 2,646 children were exposed to domestic violence within the home. Some of the children were said to have been taken through counselling programmes to ensure that their experiences did not have permanent and negative impacts on them.
The report said, “From January 2018 to December 2018, the attention of DSVRT was drawn to incidents of child abuse in 19 schools. All the erring schools are under investigation by the Office of Education Quality Assurance in the Ministry of Education. All the defilement cases have been taken to court.”

Saraki’s Aide Reacts As Crowd Calls Senate President “Thief” In Kwara

The camp of Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Sunday reacted to the viral video, which showed a crowd chorusing “thief, thief” in Kwara State on Saturday.
Olu Onemola, Saraki’s Special Assistant on New Media, said the incident was sponsored by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He stated that the plan of the APC was already known and that to avoid any violence, PDP members remained calm and unprovoked.
Onemola tweeted: “APC Supporters are pushing this ‘choreographed’ video of a few APC thugs and children who were mobilised to the entrance of the PDP Campaign Rally in Okuta, where over 2000 people showed up. These are the facts.
“About 50 meters to the venue of the rally, the mobilised APC elements, who were about 60 began chanting obscenities. The PDP supporters were in their thousands.
“To avoid any violence, based on instructions from the campaign, the PDP supporters in the area ignored the few APC supporters and went straight to the Emir’s palace.
“At the Emir’s palace, the huge and enthusiastic crowd began rooting and chanting for Bukola Saraki. The Emir of Okuta himself spoke glowingly of the Senate President and apologised on behalf of the mobilised miscreants.
“The Emir explained that the APC supporters had been fed with drugs to prompt their misbehavior.
“The Senate President then proceeded to the rally, where he addressed a huge and enthusiastic crowd of supporters.”
